After nearly 5 years of research at CREOL, Shubham Dawda is being recognized for his hard work.
Following his presentation on “Non-Gaussian Light Scattering Phenomena and Applications”, Dawda was announced as the winner of CREOL’s 2024-2025 Student of the Year award.
“I truly think that the work that we do is useful in terms of biomedical optics, for noninvasive technologies,” Dawda says. “The techniques that we use for making our measurements is something that our senior PhD students have actually translated to the clinic, where they have made these measurements on patients while they’re undergoing surgery.”
As the winner of the competition, Dawda will receive a $600 prize and a certificate to be presented during the 2025 Industrial Affiliates Symposium on April 18. He will also give a talk at the Symposium. Dawda says he’s grateful for his family, his research group, and his advisor, Professor Aristide Dogariu.

“These measurements are very simple, they’re not complicated, they’re cheap, they’re clean, they’re simple, robust, statistical measurements,” Dawda says. “That’s what inspires me.” Read more about Dawda’s research here.
Two additional students were named finalists in the Student of the Year Competition. Amin Hashemi Shahraki ‘24MS and Andrew Howe ‘23MS will each receive a $200 prize and a certificate to be presented at the 2025 Industrial Affiliates Symposium. Hashemi Shahraki presented “Programmable Integrated Topological Photonics” and Howe presented “A New Standard Metrology Method for Refractometry”.
