CREOL PhD Student, Debasmita Banerjee, Wins Prestigious Paper Prize at Siegman School on Lasers
Debasmita Banerjee, a PhD student at the University of Central Florida’s College of Optics and Photonics (CREOL), has been awarded the McMurtry Paper Prize at the prestigious Siegman International School on Lasers 2024.
The Siegman School, established by the Optica Foundation, brings together the brightest minds in lasers and photonics for a week-long program each summer. Participants attend lectures by leading industry experts and present their research in poster sessions. The program not only offers students exposure to cutting-edge developments in the field but also fosters connections with industry leaders and fellow researchers.
Named after Anthony Siegman, a renowned Optica president and pioneering figure in photonics, the school emphasizes both technological innovation and the importance of nurturing the next generation of scientists. Banerjee’s recognition at this event is a testament to her expertise and dedication, and a proud moment for CREOL and the broader UCF community.
“It was amazing to meet the scientists whose names I have only read in papers and to be surrounded by some of the smartest minds on the planet. Initially, I was nervous and unsure of what to expect, but within a day, I felt a sense of purpose and unity as we all gathered to learn about advancing photonics research,” Banerjee said. Banerjee’s poster presentation stood out among those from nearly 100 top graduate students, earning her this significant honor. Her achievement reflects the high caliber of research being conducted at CREOL and underscores the institution’s role as a leader in the field.
