Zimmermann, who conducts research under Professor Miguel Bandres, was awarded a 2026 SPIE Optics and Photonics Scholarship, presented to outstanding student members for their potential contributions to the field. His research focuses on unconventional wave propagation, topological photonic insulators, fiber optics, and non-Hermitian quantum optics, advancing new approaches to controlling light in complex photonic systems.

In addition, Zimmermann was selected as a Zuegel Family Scholar to attend the 2026 Siegman International School on Lasers in Milan, Italy. The merit-based scholarship waives the program registration fee and is awarded to a limited number of participants each year.

Held at the Politecnico di Milano, the Siegman International School brings together approximately 70 outstanding graduate students from around the world for an intensive week of advanced lectures, networking, and collaboration in laser science and photonics. During the program, Zimmermann will also present his research poster, “Enhancing Control of Topological Edge Modes: Embedded Topological Insulators,” showcasing his latest work in topological photonic lattices.
