The Laser Plasma Laboratory conducts cutting-edge research in laser and plasma physics using high-intensity, ultrashort pulsed lasers. We have built several state-of-the-art laser systems capable of generating pulses with durations on femtosecond timescales. These systems are tunable, allowing for variable beam size, pulse duration, and peak powers greater than a terawatt. With these capabilities, we study the interactions of high-intensity ultrashort pulses with their environment as they propagate. Although the work we do is centered on laser engineering and fundamental science, our research has had and continues to have an impact on a broad range of applications in the defense industry. Our graduate students play a central role in the advancement of high-intensity, ultrashort pulsed laser research.
