At the invitation of the Chemical and Materials Engineering Department of the University of Alberta in Edmonton, Professor Richardson gave the Andrew Main Lecture on October 27th 2016, as part of the D.B. Robinson Distinguished Speaker Series. His lecture, entitled, “New paradigms in laser-based remote sensing”, reviewed new optical approaches to remote sensing, particularly of relevance to the oil-sand industry. Before the presentation he participated in workshop on “Standoff sensors in oil sands operations” with university researchers, oil-sand industry experts and representatives of Canadian federal and provincial agencies. After the Lecture, Professor Richardson was presented with a glass sculpture, suitable entitled the “Oil Drop” by Brian Kelk, a self-taught sculptor from the Alberta College of Art and Design’s Hot Glass program. Presenting the sculpture to Dr Richardson is Dr Qi Liu, professor in the Chemical and Mechanical Engineering Dept. Others in the photo (from left to right) are Professor Thomas Thundat, Canada Excellence Research Chair in Oil Sands Molecular Engineering, Robert Fedosejevs, Professor, Electrical & Computer Engineering, and Richardson’s second graduate student, and Professor Vien Van, Director of the Engineering Physics program in the Electrical & Computer Engineering Department at the University of Alberta.
