Graduate Certificate Programs:

The Graduate Certificate Program is designed to provide working professionals with knowledge and training in optical systems and applied optics and photonics to enhance their career opportunities and meet their current responsibilities. The certificate program compliments their technical backgrounds in science and engineering with the basic principles and applications of optical systems, lasers, and photonic devices and systems.

Certificate programs can be completed fully online, but may also be completed in person.

Curriculum:

The certificate program requires 12 credit hours minimum beyond the bachelor’s degree. Students complete two required courses and two elective courses for a total of 12 credit hours.

Two graduate certificate options are offered.

Graduate Certificate in Optical Imaging Systems:

The certificate program compliments working professionals’ backgrounds in science and engineering with the basic principles and applications of optical engineering in imaging, electro-optic systems, radiometry, and optical system design.

Required Courses: 6 Credit Hours

  • OSE 5115 Interference and Diffraction – 3 CH
  • OSE 6211 Imaging and Optical Systems – 3 CH
Elective Courses: 6 Credit Hours
Choose two of the following four courses:
 
  • OSE 6313 Materials for Optical Systems – 3 CH
  • OSE 5203 Geometrical Optics – 3 CH
  • OSE 6265 Optical Systems Design – 3 CH
  • OSE 5525 Laser Engineering – 3 CH

Graduate Certificate in Applied Photonics:

The certificate program compliments working professionals’ technical backgrounds in science and engineering with the basic principles and applications of photonics engineering in fiber communication systems, lasers, medicine, and aerospace and defense photonics.

Required Courses: 6 Credit Hours

  • OSE 5414 Fundamentals of Optoelectronic Devices – 3 CH
  • OSE 6111 Optical Wave Propagation – 3 CH
Elective Courses: 6 Credit Hours
Choose two of the following five courses:
 
  • OSE 6474 Fundamentals of Optical Fiber Communications – 3 CH
  • OSE 6143 Fiber Optics Communication – 3 CH
  • OSE 5525 Laser Engineering – 3 CH
  • OSE 6421 Integrated Photonics – 3 CH
  • OSE 6536 Semiconductor Lasers – 3 CH

Application Requirements

Admission is open to those with a bachelor’s degree in science and engineering or a closely related discipline from a regionally accredited institution. Applicants to this program who have attended a college/university outside the United States must provide a credential evaluation showing an equivalent bachelor’s degree in the U.S.
