The Heterogeneous Integrated Photonics Laboratory at CREOL conducts groundbreaking research on ultracompact integrated photonic devices and circuits for optical communications, nonlinear and quantum photonics, microwave photonics, and related applications. Our researchers work on the full innovation cycle, from device and circuit concepts, theory, and design through nanofabrication and experimental characterization.

Our research primarily targets near-infrared wavelengths, while also extending to the visible and mid-infrared regimes. We work with a broad range of photonic materials, including silicon, III-V compound semiconductors, nonlinear dielectrics, and glasses. Many of our current efforts focus on thin-film lithium niobate—a platform pioneered by our team—and its heterogeneous integration with other material platforms.

The lab’s primary goal is to develop transformative integrated photonic solutions through a bottom-up approach, from device and system design to fabrication in UCF’s cleanroom facilities. When needed, we also explore fundamental theory to address emerging challenges and enable new concepts.

Our measurement laboratories support comprehensive device and circuit characterization, with optical sources, detectors, and spectrum analyzers spanning the visible to mid-infrared, as well as RF instrumentation for optical communications and microwave applications.
